Start Where You Art

Woke up before the alarm.
So ready to go home
And to start back in on everything.
So itchy
To be at my desk.
Fully engaged with all the various projects.
I started sorting, listing, prioritizing.
And getting more and more agitated
About still having two days away.
Two days till I could really start.

And then I meditated.
And finally remembered
Start where you are.
Oops.

Start where you are
Is one of the tools
I really understand
Totally believe in
Actually often use
And regularly remind clients about.
And still sometimes forget.
(So much to say about remembering and forgetting - will save for another day:)

Start where you are
Is one of the biggest takeaways
From my years on the yoga mat.
Stretching while you’re stiff.
Is the basic metaphor.
Breathe into the stiffness.
Don’t just sit there
Waiting for something to be different.
Make things different
By taking action towards change.
The first action
Is understanding
The second is acceptance.
And the third is doing something.

Whether that means
Getting on stage
Before you fully understand your comedy.
Writing the first draft
Before you fully understand the story.
Expanding your consciousness
Before you understand what you are expanding into.

Don’t wait to be perfect
At whatever
Before whatever.
Start anyway.

Start where you are.
And here’s an assignment: where are you?!

And maybe because I’m in NY
When I reminded myself
To start where you are
I heard myself say
Start where you art.
Ha ha.

Start where you art.
Where you create.
Start at the source.
Which is with you
Where ever you are.
In whatever mood you are in.
Whatever imperfections of situation.
And less than thrilling past results.
Whatever craft limitations you have.
Time challenges.
Tech inadequacies.
Fears.

Start where you are.
Don’t leave yourself out.
Where are you?
In the world.
In your development.
In your work.
In your day.
In your cycle.
In your love life.
In your year.
In your health.
In your finances.
In your recovery.
In your household.
In your politics.
In your existential crisis?

And if you don’t know where you are.
That’s where you are.
In a space of figuring out where you are.
And maybe just asking the question
Where am I?
Helps you jump into starting.
Let’s see where I am
Helps you open the draft.
Listen to the set.
Do the Insta post.
Pick the one thing
To begin with just for today.

So I mapped out the things I can do
Before I get back to my desk.
And one of those things
Is this.
Another is remembering
How much I love sitting at my desk.
Which I had grown pretty weary of
By the end of December.

It’s so good to dig in and focus hard
On every brushstroke.
But it’s also helpful
To step back and see the whole painting.
If you know what I mean.
Start where you art.

Here’s to a great year of starting.
And to finishing too.
Let me know if you need help
Figuring out where you are
And how you might be able to get to the next level.
I have room for a few wonderful clients in my 2023 plan.
Reach out to set up a call to see if we might be a good fit.

Infinitely Yours,
Beth
